Bacolod Batch 1 Day 5

We started by 10 am, since the group who were suppose to deliver the wake-up session have some things to take care of. After which, they started presenting their chapters. We weren’t able to finish all the presentation due to time constraints.

After lunch, we assessed the courseware and the discussed if JEDI were able to meet their expectations and stuff. At this point, some teachers left early. They said that they have matters to attend to, since the day after is already the start of classes. By 2:00, we started the post-test. They finished the test by 3:30. We discussed the answers to the post-test after which, and I was happy to see that they have greatly improved basing from the pre-test. Like, there was someone who got only 1 pt in the pre-test, and got 14 pts in the post-test. I think it is a great achievement.

After the post-test, we had picture taking, and then they awarded me a certificate of appreciation. ^_^ Which is somewhat ironic, since the participants’ certificates haven’t arrived yet. I have a certificate, but they don’t. >_< I think there was a problem with LBC and the package was lost. So Ma’am Gerilyn said that she will mail me the certificates so I could sign, and then, send the certificate to each individual.

This batch, named themselves the “jedibroom” and their batch head is Ms. Mehreen. I dismissed the class at around 4:30 pm.

Bacolod Batch1 Day 4

We started a little late than the usual. Some of the teacher who were suppose to deliver the wake-up session were not present, so we have to postpone the wake-up session. We started right away with the discussion about Inheritance, Polymorphism and Interface. We had a 20-minute hands-on exercise right after.

The discussion about Threads and Networking came in the afternoon. We didn’t have much time to tackle Generics, so I asked them to read on that instead. During the later part of the afternoon, I divided the programming 1 module into 4 and asked them to create machine exercises and machine problems for the chapters assigned to them. They started reviewing the courseware right away and discussed with their groupmates. Tomorrow, they will be discussing the changes and additions they have made in the course ware and the machine exercises and problems they created.

By 4:20, I gave out tomorrow’s schedule since some of the La Salle people have to leave early for a certain meeting in their school.

I dismissed them at around 4:55.

Bacolod Batch 1 Day 3

The wake-up session was so hilarious (yes that’s definitely the right word :-P ). Mr. Arno Gamboa’s group was assigned to deliver the day’s wake-up session. He gave out a modern-day version of the “paa-tuhod-balikat-ulo” (that’s what he calls their presentation). I can’t put into words how he did it, but everyone was really laughing their heart out.

Afterwhich, we continued with the lecture on Chapter 10 (Creating your own class) which was given out by another teacher. I knew that he tried to explain the concepts, but his understanding of the chapter was poor. He didn’t know when and how to use set and get methods and create classes and instantiate them. He ended up confusing everyone. I re-explained the whole chapter. Also, with the help of four teacher from UNO-R, who added their input in the lecture, the group was enlightened.

We were suppose to move on to Polymorphism when some of the teachers said that they haven’t fully understood “Classes” and that they want to have a case study wherein they could apply creation of classes, instantiation. This means, we have to postpone the discussion for intro to programming 2. We had lunch break afterwards.

Over lunch, the four teachers from UNO-R and I were thinking of a nice case study. We thought of a simple student information system to be instantiated by a student registration class. In the case study, the requirements are to use the set and get method and the static variable since those are the points where they are really confused at. We had a board exercise about this. Later on, I gave them hands-on exercise extending the board work.

By 3:15, we started to tackle Intro to Programming 2’s Exception and Assertion which was given out by Mr. Moises — UNO-R’s IT genius who is already Sun Certified. He didn’t have trouble delivering the lecture. He actually created some slides to enhance the courseware. We ended up with his lesson. I asked them to do the exercises at home. I gave out the schedule for tom, and then dismissed them.
